It was Joe's birthday yesterday and he got to take the day off of work. At first we were determined to make it our lazy day, but then we decided to head to Napa for some wine tasting at V. Sattui Winery. We got lunch at the winery, enjoyed the pretty landscape architecture of it, and of course, took some photographs!

A little over a week ago, I helped Tammy Tibbetts, founder of She's the First with their cupcake bake-off fundraiser webpage, and I just fell in love with the organization, which helps girls all over the world reach their education potential.

And now the She's the First bake-off signups have begun! Last year this fundraiser raised $22,800 in only one week to sponsor the education of 48 girls that wouldn't have had the opportunity otherwise. The challenge website also states that there are 40 million girls in the world that aren't getting the education that they should be, something that seems so crazy and sad to me. Are you ready to do a tie-dye cupcake bake-off to raise money to give another, if not more, 48 girls a chance at an education? Joe did it! He made pizza on the BBQ and I've got to say it came out pretty scrumptious for only having a few ingredients.

What you'll need:
1 package of pizza dough. (Got ours at Safeway.)
1 large tomato
1 bunch of basil
1 clove of garlic
1/4 cup of olive oil
Good soft cheese

How we made it:
1. Prepare your dough, roll it out on a bed of flour.
2. Chop up a few leaves of basil and a clove of garlic then mix them with about 1/4 cup of olive oil.
3. Chop up your tomato.
4. Add the basil and olive oil mix to your tomato and on top of your dough.
5. Prepare your cheese and have your basil leaves washed and ready.
6. Go to the BBQ and set it at high temperature for about five to seven minutes while it heats up.
7. Put your dough and tomato on the grill and close the lid for approximately two minutes.
8. Flip your dough around, and smooth your cooked tomato over it as a paste.
9. Add the cheese and basil leaves onto the dough.
10. Let it cook for another two minutes.
11. You're done!
What are your plans for the weekend? Joe and I are hoping to sleep in this weekend. Joe's also planning to make BBQ pizza! Not pizza with BBQ toppings, but literally a pizza cooked on the BBQ. Lets see how it turns out!

I've decided that in celebration of my love of Etsy craft-makers, I would start a segment featuring my favorite items from the week. And, I guess I'll start off with a ring that made me literally think "Oooooo." I love with this sapphire engagement ring by Sunday Owl. It's rustic and romantic, and would be perfect if your love is the vintage type.

In his poetic book about star-crossed lovers, Shimamoto and Hajime, Murakami is at once innovative and zen-like in South of the Border, West of the Sun. The start of the novel drags on, while we learn about Hajime's past; one that has led him to a happy, yet unfulfilled life as husband, father of two, and successful business owner of two Jazz bars. Although these stories are necessary to understanding our protagonist, the book doesn't pick up until about halfway through, when Shimamoto, Hajime's childhood best friend, reappears one night and changes his life forever.

Their relationship is at once intriguing and never feels forced; Hajime and Shimamoto are simply better together. You can't put the book down during the last few chapters, but the ending leaves you wanting more; more answers; more interaction; more of a definitive ending instead of the poetic ones that are signature Murakami. South of the Border, West of the Sun is not for the faint of heart. Expect a sad tale of true love that's even more distressing than Katniss and Peeta's, but that leaves you cheering on the lovers just as much.

At only a little over two-hundred pages, the book is a quick and easy read; and can easily be finish in less than a week if you read even a little of it every day. The translation isn't the best, as Murakami's imagery is excellent but the words don't always transpose into English the correct way, diminishing the impact of several key moments. There was also an evident grammar mistake within the text, which turned out to be a turn-off. But looking past these details, you're looking at a few hours of a unique read that will leave you thinking about your own life, and what makes happiness work.

I am so stoked to have released the first eleven ZoiShop 2013 loose-leaf calendars! They're available in two sizes, 4x6 and 5x7. Each calendar comes with thirteen pages-one cover page, and twelve calendar pages. This year, I wanted to make sure to bring back my jellyfish photo calendar, my most popular.

These are just my mini calendars though, I'm working on releasing poster-sized calendars I hope to have listed before the end of the month!

A lot of people think that paper books are a dying breed. I admit, I even have a Kindle and love my reader. But that doesn't mean that I don't believe in hard copies of books. Our new bookcase is full of them. I had wanted to create photo bookmarks for a while, but I couldn't figure out how to go about creating something that I could make at home, and not have to order via the Internet. I finally decided on laminating! And so far, I really like the way my new bookmark line at ZoiShop has turned out.

Like to read? Give them a peek if you get a moment. They're affordable and make a great gift for yourself or a loved one!

Below are just a handful of photographs from my trip to Mexico with my mum in July. We went to Xcaret park and several archaeological ruins like Tulum. One of my favorite aspects of the trip was getting to see such a different wildlife in the jungle. It was also the first time in forever that I'd been on a plane! It was a bit nerve-wrecking, but I occupied myself by taking photographs out the window.

Did anyone go on any exciting trips this summer?

I love this DIY camera strap idea from Chictopia! Isn't it nifty? I just got a sewing machine, and I've been trying to think of projects I can do with limited abilities (I'm just learning), and this is perfect! If you have a sewing machine, you can also use this idea if you have interchangeable purse straps. You can also find someone to lend you their sewing machine if you want to try this out and don't have one.

Where have the past few months gone? How do you find time to do everything in your day?

It's been hard to keep up with everything that I want to keep up with. This blog being one of those things. A quick recap of what my life has been the past few months... I've gotten a full time job working at South Lake Tahoe High School as the athletics and vice principal's secretary. I love working with kids, and helping one of our students get his senior project mentor form from his mentor made my day. Seeing how happy he got from my help was pretty awesome; I was recently published in Reed Literary Magazine. One of my photographs was used for their cover and I had a photograph published inside as well; I have started writing a young adult novel, and I'm super excited about it; and of course I'm continuing my photography, and my shop, ZoiShop, has reached over 100 sales!

At the end of last year I had an engagement session with one of my good friends, Ana. She had been dating her high school sweetheart for over five years, and this past summer they finally got engaged! We went to a water temple in Redwood City, California. A really pretty place that I had never visited before, despite it only being a few minutes away. We had the place to ourselves, except for a few workers, so it was great to be able to roam around as we wishes.

I was thrilled to be able to take their engagement photos and thought I would share some of my favorites.

Congrats to Ana and Edwin!

Happy New Year Everyone!
I know I haven't written anything on here for a while, and it's mostly due to my new endeavor, The Handmade Wedding. It's a wedding blog, with a mostly DIY oriented vibe. It also includes real weddings, projects, a bunch of great segments like The Manmade Wedding by Joe and Beauty & Fitness by me.

We launched the blog only a week ago, and I'm really excited by the success it's been having and all the positive feedback I've been receiving from it so far. We reached over 1,100 views last week, and I'm hoping to increase the amount of page views this week by at least 100. So if you haven't checked it out yet, take a moment and take a peek at it! There's a lot of great stuff coming up this week and onward.

We're also looking for DIY contributors as well as real weddings and engagements to feature on the blog, so if you're interested in any of these, please click here for details!

Enough about me though, I want to hear about your new endeavors for the new year? What are your resolutions if any, and how do you plan on achieving them?

Hope everyone's new year is off to a great start. I wish everyone much success in 2012!

There is nothing as special as having a deep and unnerving passion for the work one does. Artist Anca Gray is not stranger to this. A passion for her art seethes from her every word.
After acquiring a degree in architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology, spending a few years as an architect and designer, and working at a local organic restaurant, in 2010 Anca finally started working full time on her art.
When we went camping, I would first sit down and draw the trees and mountains and only then run around and explore. To my mother's despair, I always loved getting my hands dirty, and creating is in my blood. Although I got derailed by family and society's expectations, in the end it was just a matter of listening to my heart, letting go, and jumping in," Anca said.
"I love creating delicate new art pieces out of discarded vintage books and found objects! They become one of a kind, original, mixed media abstracts and figure paintings. I also create found poetry reclaimed from existing vintage books. I am interested in everything poetic, emotion, capturing and savoring unique moments in time and space, the simultaneous absence and presence of all colors, embedded memory of objects, texture, and a raw and feminine aesthetic. I wish for my work to reflect glimpses of hope and [to] help widen the horizons of possibility," Anca said.

Anca's artwork is also at times dreamlike and geometric, and always unconventionally alluring.

"My husband dubbed me Anca Gray because I surround myself with black, white, and gray, and lady gray is my favorite tea, of which I drink about a pot of every day," Anca said.

Her daily pot of tea might be what allows Anca to work often chaotic hours. "I'm fairly obsessive, so I stay with a piece until it is finished, which means it needs to be finished within days. I've been known to work on a piece for 30 hours straight, and only get some sleep once it feels complete. I often work on several pieces at once while I wait for layers of paint to dry."

Anca's inability to stop once she's started working on a piece, is a true testament to her passion. And every piece she creates and sells is a piece she truly believes is complete and ready to be hung in a buyer's home.

"I finally know what I want to be when I grow up, so I wouldn't trade it for the world. I am doing what I long to be doing. What I've always longed to be doing," Anca said.

Outside of her craft Anca enjoys everything about food, cooking for friends, reading food blogs, parties and afternoon tea with friends, camping, reading, skydiving, seeking god, and loving her husband all while trying to remember to breathe.

Anca is not truly sure where she will be in five years, as she believes that anything and everything can change within that time frame, but she hopes that she'll still be cooking for and feeding the people she loves, getting her hands dirty, and becoming more comfortable by the day in her own skin.
